Best monitor for MEGA65?

  • just some feedback, at discord they were discussing the same question and one person posted the link to the following

website that offers quite interesting displays for a quite OK price.
    https://www.beetronics.de/15-zoll-monitor-bnc-vga-hdmi

    "OK price"? More than 320 EUR for a 1024x768 15" monitor? 8\|

You have to pay for such monitors something around 10-30 EUR second hand on ebay.

Second hand with run down CCFL backlights usually.

  • the price is the next topic

This monitor disqualifies itself from the price alone. Seriously: A price of over 320 EUR for a small 15" inch monitor would still be too expensive nowadays, even if it was covered with gold leaf.

Sorry, but sometimes I really get the impression that the MEGA65 is only meant for "well-heeled" people and you almost have to be "ashamed" if you don't want to (can't) pay 300 EUR for the monitor in addition to the 600 - 700 EUR for the computer. :|

    Edit:

Sorry, it's not meant as harshly as I typed it above. But I do not want to delete it now.

I had just had a conversation with a woman in the context of a voluntary activity in an association, who does not know how she can come the rest of the month still about the rounds, because she has no more money for food. That also gets on your nerves. And if I then read here, people spend so much money for "fun", then I sometimes judge unfairly. Was not meant that way! Everyone is granted his hobby and I want to make there also nothing mies!

  • Snoopy all good, i totally get your point ! :-)

we only list alternatives. Yes, the posted monitor is expensive, but it is a monitor, built to last.

So whoever has the dough, can at least see, that there are still new 4:3 alternatives available.

Thank you! As written, I'm sorry that I wrote so harshly. It was just the described moment that made me overreact there unfairly. :|

The MEGA65 project is really not the cheapest in the scene, regarding the price, but you have always looked that everyone who wants can deal with it. With "real" hardware in the form of the Nexys board up to the completely free solution in the form of the really ingenious MEGA65 emulator (Xemu from LGB-Z ).

And who wants to buy a brand new monitor for the MEGA65, now knows where to find one. ;)

So, sorry, and now still good luck with the final spurt with the MEGA65!

  • Okay, I have made a few pictures from Belinea and Eizo monitor. :)

I seems that there are artifacts because of upscaling to the 1280x1024 resolution of the monitors.

I make pictures both in NTSC and PAL and both the startscreen and a 640x400 bitmap screen with ellipse and lines.

Because I want to share the unscaled photos, they are too big to attach them here.

You can dowload the zip file with all photos (53 MB) from my website:

  • Ahh, Paul also replied: i attach his comment:
    - Paul: MEGA65 is 720x576 or 720x480 only native.-

So, the MEGA65 always outputs either a PAL or an NTSC signal, both via HDMI and VGA?

In the beginning, there were some hints about FullHD resolutions in the VIC-IV, did this idea get scrapped completely (which I personally wouldn't mind at all)?

I wonder if there is a VGA to S-Video converter somewhere, which does not affect the signal too much when it's already coming in PAL/NTSC resolutions...

Also, thanks to KiDra and Snoopy for their photos, that also helps a lot.

Maybe a TV would be a good choice then, instead of a computer monitor, because the TV is designed to handle PAL/NTSC resolutions. On the other hand, even Flat TVs probably have a different native resolution. It would be cool to have a TV or TFT monitor that has exactly 720x576 or 1440x1152 native.

  • Snoopy what's a bit funny though is that on your Belinea PAL Screenshot, we see this...:

...whereas on the Belinea NTSC Screenshot, we get this:

Since the difference in resolution between PAL and NTSC is only vertical, I wonder why it looks so different.

EDIT: Or is it supposed to be a joke, that "NTSC MEGA65" is shortened to "NEGA65" ;)

  • Is the image perfectly "still", or is the image "flickering", in order to simulate a higher resolution, and your camera just took one of these flicker-images?

Does it look like "NEGA65" for your eyes as well when just looking at the monitor?

    The picture is perfectly still.

I have made two other photos Belinea NTSC from the start screen:

I looks exactly as seen on this photos. Maybe there's really a NTSC NEGA65. :D

It depends how you mean. It won't output PAL or NTSC signal via VGA, as it wouldn't work with most monitors (the horizontal sync frequency is much slower, interlaced etc). What MEGA65 does (for VGA) is use VGA (not PAL or NTSC) resolutions which are "close" to PAL or NTSC in the sense that 50Hz or 60Hz mode (and resolution) for example. Or something similar :) But the key point that it's not PAL nor NTSC since that is not even defined for a VGA signal. That is, kind-of-standard 720x576/50Hz or 720x480/60Hz VGA modes.

    No idea about HDMI though.

  • okay so what kind of resolution is used in that case? 800x600?

720x576/50Hz or 720x480/60Hz VGA modes as I've written above. But those are not PAL nor NTSC, they're VGA modes totally different signal timing than good'old PAL or NTSC. Since you told that MEGA65 output PAL or NTSC which is not true, outputs VGA signal with those resolutions. But I'm sorry if I misunderstand(/-stood) you ...

But I can switch to PAL or NTSC in the Nexys board and also in your emulator. Does this define only the different number of lines?

Well, this is confusing I admit. Yes, the machine itself (real / emulated - in case of emulator) can behave like NTSC or PAL but the output video signal is not NTSC or PAL since those kind of signals cannot drive a regular VGA monitor at least. So that setting what you set as PAL or NTSC selects the used VGA mode which close enough in "result" what PAL and NTSC would be, but totally different otherwise as those are VGA signals. IIRC PAL horizontal frequency is about 15.6KHz, and 15.7 for NTSC. 720x576 VGA mode has around 31KHz or so. A normal VGA monitor - usually - cannot be driven with old-school video signals, different timing (also PAL and NTSC is interlaced). To have a really lame example from me: it basically works like a TV-to-VGA converter. yes, indeed you can have PAL and NTSC at the input but the output is a VGA signal, it's not PAL or NTSC anymore, ie cannot connect to an old school TV (since it does not know about VGA) and expect to work, what is my point.

  • but the output video signal is not NTSC or PAL since those kind of signals cannot drive a regular VGA monitor at least

There are monitors that can accept a 15kHz 50/60Hz RGBS/RGBHV signal over a VGA connector. There are also adaptor cables from a VGA connector to a SCART plug for connecting devices that can output such signals on a VGA plug to a regular European TV which can certainly accept such signals (but only rarely 31kHz VGA) via SCART.

(PAL and NTSC refer to color encoding standards, not video timings - an RGB signal does not use either of them, no matter what timing it uses)
