Unicart64 - The FPGA based cartridge for Commodore 64

  • Thanks Wolfme !
But, now I'm confusing more and more ... what the hell is this ???
    I mean step 3 ???
I will analyse it in the code, red colour is my error "detection". I will update you.

Meantime, pls. start C64 with Run/Stop (KERNAL), step 1,
load some .prg files to SD card (games or so ...)
    load SDCMDUC.PRG commander from other disk/tape/sd2iec ...,
    start SDCMDUC.PRG
Do you see firmware "UC64190124" on the top-left corner ?
Is there visible also "SD Card: OK" ?
Pls. navigate some .prg/.p00 files and press "Return" key ... it should start it
    Is it working ?

  • Oh, it does fancy things with the character color when i start with run/stop pressed.
When i move with cursor over chars on screen, they change color randomly.
And large floppy listing (from my SD2IEC) changes char color, too.

Hmm, it is really no feature, some disturbing of VIC ???
Do I have different C64 ???, Meikel has the same problem.

  • Starting commander from SD2IEC works. FW message top-left is correct, sd-card: OK.
Starting prgs work (and very fast, wow).
Cannot test P00, i have none.

Ah ok. I tested with different C64 all ok. No color change.

  • Uh, i think i must disappoint you... no color changing, solid red screen

  • Hmm, if you press General reset button (left) in this position (red screen), what will happen ?
Note: Pls. use plastic pen, not your fingers

    hi Peto

red screen & left reset button = nothing happens

red screen & C64 reset, normal C64 screen, but colourful chars when move over

if i start C64 with Run/Stop, sometimes this screen appears

pressing left reset on C64 start screen, this error appears

hope it helps you to finde the error

  • OK guys, there are 2 problems:

    1) colors over the chars - I think it is about different timing on the bus, probably every C64 computer (C64 board) has own timing behavior. Hm, this will be hardly avoid, I have no possibility to have different.
wolfme: can you also confirm, that on different C64 there are no colors over the chars ? I have understood you have 1 with & 1 without this problem.

    2) This is I hope ...
    a) some timing problem with SD card (speed of SD card)
    b) or another format of FAT32 directory structure, sectors. this file is probably not found. Maybe, you have different tool to format structure. If it is working with SDCMDUC without boot, SD card controller should be OK.

Uff, crazy, but why I don't see that ??? I have also more SD cards.

  • with SDCMDUC SD-card works perfecly. I will also try another SD-card.

    2 x SanDisk 2GB - not working
1 x SanDisk 32 GB - working, but no autoboot
1 x Verbatim 16 GB - working, but no autoboot

  • Conclusion from today.

    1) If wolfme and Meikel see the same "colour over the chars" problem, Unicart64 board HW is high probably NOT corrupted or damaged. This is good.
But, it looks like different C64 board and/or VIC inside doesn't work properly together with my FPGA firmware.

    2) This "booting" problem is possible to solve I believe. If SDCMDUC is working using Run/Stop key I should find out the place where it is ended (red screen) and why.
    With your help of course.

OK guys, I will continue in the evening ... Thank you for your quick help.

  • Yes, i can confirm that 1 C64 has color issue, other not.
I tried with different tools, tried to format 4GB sd card with fat16, but autoboot didn't work.

    OK, we wait til later...

  • Hi, my board has also arrived.
    Thanks a lot :)

I have tested it with two C64, the sd card was a Sandisk Ultra 16 GB Fat 32 with a lot of stuff from my sd2iec.

    1. Assy 250407, Vic ?

1.1 Run/Stop is working (sometimes not, but that could by the keyboard)
1.2.Setboot shows green color, ok with firmware number
1.3 does not boot (completely red screen, did not tested any buttons)
1.4 prg-Files starts normally from commander started from disc

    2. Assy 250469, Vic 8565R2

    2.1 Run/Stop is working
2.2.Setboot shows green color, ok with firmware number
    2.3 does boot
2.4 prg-Files starts from commander, did not check the flash-function yet

When I start with kernal (both assy's), load directory from disk and then scroll over some chars, they turn black (from white)

  • ASSY 250 469, VIC 8565R2
Tested with a SanDisk Ultra 32GB SDHC

    1) Run/Stop key is working (boots normal kernal)
    2) setboot.prg shows green
    3) c64-boot.prg boots without problems
    4) .prg files start fine from commander

    i can´t see any color-issues...

One small issue: when I browse files with the commander with the up/down key, it sometimes jumps several rows up/down instead of one
