GenAssister 3.1 collection is on F64 Wolke!

23 new games added (overall 489) and another worksheet with list of games using 'A' button on Genassister, but Space doesn't recognize it.

So far there are 90 games using Spacebar (and "A" button on GenAssister doesn't recognize it), but on other hand there are 108 games where "A" is doing something in the game that Spacebar doesn't recognize it (usually F1 key do that job).

There are seven separate collections inside covering all modern storage devices - BackBit, BackBit Pro/Kung Fu Flash, Pi1541 and Ultimate cartridges, SD2IEC, Tapuino plus there's collection in WAV format (you can easily transfer to MP3 if you like it that way).

GenAssister 3.2 collection is in preparation, so far 28 new games are waiting to be added.

I think 3.2 version will be final version - never say never, but I think I found almost all (noticeable) C64 games using Space/"A" button with GenAssister.

    Oh, wow, that's great news!

Only flaw of Ultimate 1541 is gone now!

If I'm newbie and wants to go retro with C64, best thing is to buy Ultimate 64 motherboard and put in C64 case and connect C64 keyboard.

This thing has really everything - reads all format you can think of, standard power supply, HDMI and analogue video input.

Is SID implementation accurate now or it's still better to buy one and put inside?

I would like to inform GenAssister users there's new GenAssister 3.0 collection on F64 Wolke!

    What we have here?

    - 248 C64 games using space as second fire button (button "A" on Megadrive/Genesis controller)

    - 137 C64 games using space for pause (button "A" on Megadrive/Genesis controller)

    - 6 C64 games using regular second C64 button (button "Z" or "C" on MegaDrive/Genesis controller)

    - 23 C64 games using "A" button on Genesis/MegaDrive controller as switch between music and SFX during game play

    - 52 C64 games using "A" button on Genesis/MegaDrive controller for going to game main menu resetting the game

    Overall 466 games!

There are separate collections for BackBit, BackBit Pro, Kung Fu Flash and Pi1541 cartridges and also for SD2IEC, Tapuino users.

Even collection in WAV format is included.

btw: The v2 works great with Briley Witch using the second button. :)

    That's great!

It's pity programmers not using more often real 2nd button on C64.

So far - besides Briley Witch - only these games using it:

Navy Seals, Pang, Robocop 2, Space Gun, Super Mario Bros 64 & Turbo Charge.

Actually, "Disk2Easyflash - Fertige Images" thread is not good either for this kind of compilation.

Compilation you made is compilation of PRG files, not disc games.

You should open separate thread for this kind of PRG compilations.

I bought official Sega MegaDrive/Genesis 2.4 GHz wireless controller from Retro-Bit to try with GenAssister adapter on C64:

Retro-Bit Official SEGA Mega Drive Black Wireless Controller 8-Button Arcade ... | eBay

Every few seconds controller switching automatically between fire and auto-fire making it useless for use with GenAssister.

I tried controller on two C64s - that means C64 is not a problem.

I tried controller on Sega MD clone - it's working without any issue, and that means controller is also not a problem itself.

That means GenAssister is a problem with this Sega MD wireless controller.

Genassister working without any issues with wired Sega MD controller, like I wrote in my review.

Before six years, I bought 80 NOS 5.25" disks - all of them in their original never-opened cardboard boxes.

First thing I did is formatting them all for C64 use with 1541 drive.

Some of them have errors during formatting, but formatting them few times sometimes help to get rid of errors.

I also noticed interesting thing with my NOS disks – it seems that NOS disks during decades create some kind of "dirt" layer on media surface not visible to human eyes, because I literally need to clean dirty head of 1541 disk drive after every 10 NOS disks I formatted!

I never had that issues when I used C64 disks back in C64 heydays.

Unfortunately, soon afterwards, my 1541 disk went out-of-alignment, and I can't get it to work properly anymore, even with alignment disk from Free Spirit Software.

Easyflash Nirvana V3.0 has been uploaded to F64 Wolke!

There are two versions, but both contain same files.

One version is with truncated names (16 letters maximum, great if you flash Easyflash or Easyflash 3 cartridge) and second version with full names (great for BackBit, Kung Fu Flash & Ultimate cartridge users).

    Updates from version v2.0:

    - added 198 Disk2Easyflash (D2EF) games thanks to Metallic's great update of D2EF program

    - all Disk2Easyflash (D2EF) games are now divided in fast & standard loading directories

    - added 26 Easyflash games

    - added 4 Easyflash game compilations

    - added 2 Easyflash demos

    - erased 79 Disk2easyflash (D2EF) game compilations in EF format made from XBANK CRT game versions

    - added NDEF GUI program for Mac & PC to make easily your own compilations from CRT XBANK game versions

    - CRT XBANK game versions now have full names and are divided in fast and standard loading directories

    EF Nirvana v3.0 contains:

    - 64 original 8K cartridge games compiled together in 1 Easyflash (EF) slot

    - 109 original 16K cartridge games compiled together in 2 Easyflash (EF) slots

    - 20 original Ultimax cartridge games compiled together in 1 Easyflash (EF) slot

    - 637 Disk2Easyflash (D2EF) games in EF format and EF-XBANK formats

    - 14 Ocean Type 1 cartridge games you can flash easily to EF cartridge

    - 206 Easyflash games (mostly disk games converted to EF format)

    - 44 Easyflash game compilations containing 140 games (mostly disk games converted to EF format)

    - 8 Easyflash demos

    - 7 EF compilations with 218 Best Of TApe Games (BOTAG Collection, games in PRG format)

For most of these collections you have very comprehensive Game Databases done in Excel format in separate directory.

Got the adapter today and everything's working fine. All auto-fire modi are perfect. With the v1 adapter i had problems with Ocean games like Navy Seals (the jump button quit to the game menu somehow) on my Ultimate Elite board, but this seems to work too now. I can fully recommend it. Well, if you like the proper Sega 6-button Joypads (or the newer clones) like i do. :)

    Yes, fantastic product!

Did you download latest GenAssister collection v2.2 from F64 Wolke?

There are 332 C64 games using that special buttons on Sega MegaDrive joypad with GenAssister adapter.

List of all of them (and what they do in games) you can find it here (scroll down a bit):

    GenAssister™ – BackBit

And does it also work, that the controller-button on which the SPACE key is, also overrides the automatic-rapidfire (das von selbst selbstschiessende Autofeuer)?

Yes, Space overrides automatic rapid fire.

I tried that with two Manfred Trenz greatest shooters - Turrican II (Space for power lines) and Enforcer - Fullmetal Megablaster (Space for smart bombs destroying all enemies on screen).

After Space, automatic rapid fire continues to work immediately.

    Guys,

    I must correct myself!

"X" button is lockable auto-fire button on Sega MD/Genesis joypad when used with GenAssister v2 adapter.

While it's on, I pressed regular fire button ("B" button on joypad), and auto-fire button is intercepted with that regular fire button on Turrican!

When regular fire button is not pressed anymore, it goes back to lockable auto-fire button!

So, everything is spot on with GenAssister v2 adapter.

So i can play Turrican with autofire enabled and intercept it via normal fire button to use the laser?

    Nope.

I'm sure even in Turrican code Manfred Trenz didn't put that option. If it's even possible to do that on C64.

But playing Turricans with this adapter is a dream.

I mean, you can use 5 out of 6 Sega Megadrive buttons for playing Turricans (4 you'll use for sure, not sure for 'Up' button, depends if you prefer it) and each of them doing something different :D

Ah, couldn't resist. Just ordered the v2. The smaller adapter size and the Auto-Fire/UP features, without the requirement to use a manual switch for the modes, are very nice.

You'll be very happy with product.

And it has not one, but two separate auto-fire buttons (lockable and unlockable) :)

    Review of GenAssister adapter v2:

This is my first review ever, hoping you'll find these informations usable.

    About predecessor (GenAssister adapter v1:)

Before one year Evie Salomon (author of wonderful BackBit cartridge and other goodies for your C64/VIC-20) made first version of GenAssister adapter (in further text: GA adapter), inspired by my idea to connect safely Sega MegaDrive/Genesis joypad to C64 port and to have more than one fire button, especially to have Space as separated/dedicated fire button on Sega joypad we all know many great games are using on C64 and also to have auto-fire button.

GA adapter occupying both C64 joystick ports, giving us on other end port to connect one Sega Genesis/MegaDrive controller.

This first version of GA adapter used „A“ button on Genesis/MegaDrive joypad as fire on alternative joystick port (in most cases recognized as Space bar if you're using Joystick on Port 2), „B“ button as regular C64 fire button, and „C“ button as regular second fire button some C64 games are using when C64GS console appears.

„Start“ button on joypad was used for toggling between port 1 and port 2. Yes, no need for switch to do that when playing games on C64.

There were also two physical switches on GA adapter allowing you to have „Auto-fire“ feature and option to have „C“ button for „Up“ direction console lovers love to have on platforms.

    Review of GenAssister v2 adapter:

Evie decided to make even better version of GenAssister adapter (in further text: GA v2 adapter) – I was lucky to receive one of first produced items for review before few weeks, having time to test it thoroughly and I can tell you things got wild in very positive way 8)

    What's new?

    a) Instead of using Sega Genesis/MegaDrive three-buttons joypad like old GA adapter used with C64, new one using six-buttons Sega Genesis/MegaDrive controller and all of them have different functions on C64, including two extra buttons – Start and Mode. That's eight buttons, each of them have different functions on C64!

    b) No more physical switches on GA v2 adapter for „UP“ mode and „Auto-fire“ mode like old GA adapter had – everything is accessible from dedicated buttons on joypad instead

    c) Much smaller footprint than old GA adapter (dimensions: 5 x 6,5 x 2,5 cm)

It also has two supports below to keep adapter at correct height with C64 joystick ports.

    d) You can use standard C64 joystick with GA v2 adapter too – there's physical switch to change between port 1 and port 2, so you you'll get two products in one ;)

Correct position on physical switch for Sega MegaDrive/Genesis joypad is middle position

    e) „Mode“ button on Sega joypad allowing you to reset whole C64 if GA v2 adapter is connected to BackBit cartridge with standard 3.5 mm audio cable giving you instant access to BackBit menu

In package I received Instruction card with both sides printed, explaining which functions all buttons doing on Genesis/MegaDrive controller when attached to C64 through GA adapter.

Which operations buttons do and how they perform?

To explain which operations all buttons do when Sega Genesis/MegaDrive joypad is attached to C64 through GA v2 adapter with my comments:

    „START“ button toggles between port 1 & 2

Comment: yellow LED light on GenAssister adapter is on when Joystick Port 2 is used, no LED light if Joystick Port 1 is used instead)

„MODE“ button returns to menu when attached to BackBit cartridge via included cable

Comment: With GA v2 adapter you'll receive retractable standard 3.5 mm audio-cable to connect audio port of Back Bit cartridge with audio-port of GA v2 adapter.

That allows you to reset whole C64 going back to BackBit menu. I reset more than 100 games and it doesn't fail even once. Reset is instant.

If you're using wireless Sega MegaDrive/Genesis controller with GA v2 adapter (don't have it at home, but they should work), it will allow you to connect C64 to big screen TV and play it from sofa without problem

“A” button performs fire on alternate joystick

Comment: That performs like you press „Space“ in most cases if C64 game using Joystick port 2, and we all know approximately 90% of them does

Very useful for many C64 games using Space as fire button (Commando, Green Beret, 1942, Cabal and many others)

“B” button performs C64 regular fire button

    “C” button mimics UP direction

Comment: believe it or not, there are console lovers among us – they get used to use dedicated button for Up on platforms, so they can do it also here with C64 platforms

“X” button toggles automatic rapid fire

Comment: automatic fire is always working when you press „X“; if you press „X“ again, it will stop.

Red LED light on GA v2 adapter is on when auto-fire is used.

    “Y” button performs rapid fire (approx. 30 times/second);

Comment: rapid fire is working when you hold that button, it stops when you don't hold it anymore

Red LED light on GA v2 adapter is on when auto-fire is used.

    “Z” button performs second fire button (first introduced with C64GS);

Comment: Regular C64s also support joysticks with 2 fire buttons, now you can play them too without problem (only six of them so far)

Testing GA v2 adapter with Sega Genesis/Megadrive six-buttons controllers:

It was tested with wired Retro-Bit official Sega MegaDrive/Genesis six-button controller (they made them recently, you can still buy them on net) and also with cheap replica of wired six-button controller with words „16-BIT“on it (you can also find them easily on net).

Both of them working great, didn't notice any lag, and I can tell you it's easier to play C64 games with controller than joystick, not to mention all these extra buttons.

Whole my C64 gaming life in youth I was dedicated to Competition Pro joystick.

It's sturdy and very precise, bet let's face the truth – it's very awkward and uncomfortable to use these days, not great for long gaming sessions and it doesn't have auto-fire switch.

Playing games like Turricans with GA v2 adapter with all these extra burttons is whole another dimension

When Sega Genesis/MegaDrive controller is used, physical switch on GA v2 adapter should be in middle position (yellow LED light on adapter is on).

Testing GA v2 adapter with regular C64 joysticks:

If you're using standard C64 joystick instead – lower position of physical switch on GA v2 adapter meaning you're using Joystick port 1 (yellow LED light on adapter is off), and when you're using Joystick Port 2, physical switch should be in upper position (yellow LED light on GA v2 adapter is on).

I tested them with standard Competiton Pro joystick and Skorpion joystick from Matt company that has auto-fire option.

Both of them working without any problem, I also didn't notice any lag.

    Few more infos:

It's interesting that red LED light on GA v2 adapter (that works when auto-fire is on) is also working when BackBit cartridge is loading the game.

I should also mention GA v2 adapter provides 100% compatibility with sensitive CIA chips and built-in fuse provides safety from short circuits.

It also came with 3D printed ABS case. You can choose colour when buying it: black or red.

    GenAssister Games collection:

If you're member of Forum 64 you can download GenAssister collection from F64 Wolke.

    This collection has:

    - 180 C64 games using Space as second fire button (button "A" on Megadrive/Genesis controller)

    - 92 C64 games using Space for pause (button "A" on Megadrive/Genesis controller)

    - 6 C64 games using regular second C64 button (button "Z" on MegaDrive/Genesis controller)

    - 14 C64 games using "A" button on Genesis/MegaDrive controller as switch between music and SFX during game play

    - 40 C64 games using "A" button on Genesis/MegaDrive controller for going to game main menu resetting the game

Or you can have this collection if you member of BackBit forum.

    Final thoughts:

Can I recommned this product? Definitely yes!

Specifications of GA v2 adapter sounds like a fairy tale, but it's true. And it works great!

Lovers of C64 shoot'em ups will be especially pleased with this product.

Documentation states "supported file types Disk image (D64, D71, D81)"

Are multi-part titles - as long as standard kernal load/save routines are being used - fully supported right now?

Or differently phrased: Do multi-part titles which work on SD2IEC work on KFF as well?

SD2IEC compatibility with disc games (you call them multi-part titles) is 78%.

Kung Fu Flash compatibility with disc games is half of that.

KFF cartridge doesn't use IEC port - using cartridge port allowing to play disc games using Kernal routines only.

Very similar results you have with BackBit cartridge regarding disc game compatibility.

On other hand, 83% of disc games that work with KFF/Backbit cartridge have instant loading time natively - it's much better than SD2IEC combined with Epyx Fastload cartridge, even with JiffyDOS too.

These cartridges don't speed up just loading time of main file of disc games (like Epyx Fastload or JiffyDOS do), but all of them are loading instantly.

Other 17% of disc games KFF/BB cartridge load main fle instantly, so it's still faster then SD2IEC with Epyx FL or Jiffy.

For disc games that don't work with SD2IEC/KFF proper fixes need to be done for each of them in code (Easyflash releases or versions of disc games that don't use Fastload routines of 1541 floppy drive).

So, basically, we're almost stuck at these percentages, because present C64 scene doing new disc game releases is not big enough to fix games that don't work with SD2IEC/KFF cartridge.

We have on yearly basis around 40 new Easyflash releases (thanks again to Master, The Joker, Knight Rider, CSixx for making them) and maybe 10 versions of disc games that will work with SD2IEC or KFF without having them already in SD2IEC/KFF Nirvana collections you can find on F64 Wolke.

And there are around 2.460 disc games for C64..

I wanted to back up floppy disks with an SD2ICE in images (and back).

So I came to the easyFlash3, because this can then copy the images directly via USB to the PC.

An alternative would obviously be KungFuFlash, although I am not interested in the additional options for my job at first (but maybe later)

Easiest option to convert D64/D81 files to 1541/1581 drive and from 1541/1581 drive to D64/D81 files is BackBit cartridge.

No need for PC, USB, USB driver or PC/C64 additional software at all for doing this, conversion software is in BackBit firmware.

All you need is C64 with BackBit cartridge and 1541 or 1581 floppy drive.
