Zeha invited me here from Lemon64. I showed his Frogs / Shotgun 4 player cartridge at the show last weekend in Chicago. Lots of fun!
The 3D image through VR64 does not look distorted. There seems to be no need to skew the graphics. I am not sure of the reason. Honestly, I never thought about it and through all the testing it never seemed to need any distortion.
Because the scene does not move when you turn your head, the main action needs to be in the center of that eyes screen. Looking to the top or bottom is awkward. I had to rearrange the game once I started testing it.
I had a contest for the high score. Three people battled all day playing for many hours. I was really honored that they thought it was a cool and fun little game. This is only my second assembly program!
I may build a batch for sale if there is interest.
If there are other questions, please let me know.
Danke!

ZeHa. That probably is a major factor. I had to move all the action near the center of the display. If you really want to see details on the edges, it is hard. You naturally move your head that direction, but the screen moves with you! I found the edges work well for scenery like the backgrounds of the moon and mountains though.

@ jim_64: Thats a great offer, may be I will come back to it.
However @ZeHa , what I meant was more in general, that if the product is not some kind of commercial product, it will not encourage many people to write SW for it.
For example: Actually I write something like a special form of a web browser. I would not do it if the Ethernet-board for the commodore only ways a result of the hobby project.Anyhow, great proof of concept.

Do you plan to add some sensors to the VR64?
Must be easy with a small ardoino and a position sensor.
The biggedt problem would be to synchronize the game and the Position of the headset.
But you have "only" 4 directions so it must not be so precisely. -

erste VR-Experimente würd's mich schon reizen.<EDIT Syshack: Beitrag hierher verschoben, weil gleiches Thema>

Sorry, again in English.
Others can add sensors to a new version if they want to.
My opinion is to keep it a simple extension of the commodore 64 with no rotation sensor. My game uses the keyboard therefore rotating the body of the user make no sense. Maybe it would be OK with a joystick game, but now there is a lot of wires to not get tangled. I am a new ML programmer therefore others will be able to better program rotation. However, it will probably never feel natural like google cardboard does. Maybe it would work OK with something like "battle zone".

There is graphically so much to do!
I'm curious about the first demo![Externes Medium: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xufso6iOv6Y]
Thank you Womak!
I wanted to tell everyone that there is now a video that you can play through phone based VR sets (e.g. google cardboard) which lets you see the 3D effect. It is a little washed out and blurry, especially in the intro screens and some color is lost. However, it really lets you see the 3D effect that is created with VR64.
You can also see that there is no issue with curving or bending of the graphics at the edges.
Enjoy!

It's definitely a cool project and even the game looks quite appealing to me.
Depending on the price I would love to get one of the VR sets. And I hope someone will create at least a few more titels for it -
Based on the response, I am making some for sale. The official thread is here:

I don't know what the shipping cost to Germany (or other parts of Europe) would be, but if there is interest, I will research it!
Danke!

Yes the price would be interesting

FYI. The price of the LCDs had risen $6, so I was charging extra when I announced the VR64s for sale. Now the price of the LCDs has gone back down! So I reduced the price by $6 for the current time. I have an initial batch of LCDs on order at this reduced price. No guarantee what the price will be next time I order LCDs! If it rises again, I will need to adjust the price for those units.
I have one reservation from Germany, so I will need to get a quote on shipment soon.

Sorry. The price reduction on the LCDs was a mistake. I actually ordered the wrong ones and had to cancel that order!
Therefore the price for each VR64 is back to the original price I listed on Lemon64. See the thread on Lemon64 for the latest.
If anyone wants to cancel their reservation at any time I would understand. Please do remember that the reservation is no obligation to order.
Sorry for the confusion!
