I have been watching these forums for a few years.
The SCP hardware does the actual "copying" and that hasn't changed in several years. The only thing that the PC software does is tell the hardware when/what to read/write. You can control the hardware using any device that has a serial port, so you don't need PC software to actually do any copying... it's just the interface to the hardware.
The hardware is a flux dumper with a 25ns resolution. The only thing magic is knowing when to terminate a write so it doesn't occur in the middle of valid data.
I have a similar type of "copy box" that is controlled with a PIC micro and LCD screen.
