  • Hi all,

It seems I have the only STEREOinSID in North America!

I am very impressed by the board, but the documentation is sparse/confusing and Malte is hard to get ahold of. I was able to read the entries on c64-wiki.de, fortunately, the Google Translation into English is very good. I was also able to read some of the threads here. But I still have some questions.

    1. How should JP2 be set? I have two 8580s on a new 64C, PCB ASSY NO. 250469 - PCB NO. 252311 REV.A . The Wiki and included instructions do not agree.

    2. I have my 2nd SID set to $D420. The included 2_SID_TEST_SAMAR.prg works perfectly. BOYS_D420.PRG however, plays on one SID for about 2 or 3 seconds, then switches to the other SID, and the first SID is silent. Any ideas on what could be wrong?

    3. I can't get any of the .MUS/.STR files to play in MINISTEREOPLAYER. i.e. MOON.MUS. They all sound terrible and the music only comes out of one channel. Plus only a few are stereo (.STR), why are the others included?

(I just realized that line 5 in MINISTEREOPLAYER is the IDE64 CHANGE command, that's why I got a ?SYNTAX ERROR without my IDE64 installed! Should handle this better, I may patch it)

    4. Why is there an extra wire on the JP6 header for the miniclips on the "n.c." connection? Would it ever be needed?

    5. Does anyone have the "backside assembling photo" referenced in the instructions?

And finally, where can I get more stereo music files to test? I already have many of the ones from CSDB, any others I should know of?

    Thanks,
    Leif Bloomquist aka Schema

Thank you for the link. I saw that already, and it contradicts the instructions that were included with the board. I will try those settings for JP2 though!

For 2 x 8580 on a rev. 469 board, you have to close all of the six jumper bridges on JP2.

This may be caused by the wrong filter setting of JP2 as seen on your photos. ;)

  • Thanks - I have closed all the jumpers on JP2 and JP4, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. Is there a danger the SIDs may have been damaged?

What is the meaning of each of the jumpers on JP2/JP4?

One interesting thing I noticed (debugging live at ECCC) - It appears to work OK (except the filters) when it is at $DE00.

i.e. Using the MINISTEREOPLAYER as a test - MOON.MUS sounds perfect with the STEREOinSID at $DE00 or $DF00. However, the sound is very garbled when it is set to $D420. The miniclip connections to the 8500 appear solid. What else could it be?

Maybe there are some badly soldered joints on the PCB. Did you check them all properly?

The leftmost jumper of JP2 will - when pulled - reduce the voltage for SID 1 from 12 to 9 volts. This is necessary when operating an 8580 with an old mainboard, which originally provides the 12 volts which are needed by a 6581. In all other cases - like in yours - the jumper has to remain in place.
The two other jumpers of JP2 will configure the two filter capacitors for the SID type: Both set for 8580, both pulled for 6581.

JP4 works the same, but for SID 2.

I don't know your tool MINISTEREOPLAYER. Do you have a link?

If there is something wrong with $D420, then the A12/A15 at the 8500 are bad.

This does not make sense either, as the "2 SID TEST/SAMAR" program on 2stereoinsid.d64 works perfectly at $D420.
