help - sd2iec stopped responding

  • Hello,

I have a sd2iec which worked flawlessy until i booted it up one day. Only thing i get is "device not present error." I have tried 8,9,10,11.

When i turn on the device, the red light gets lit, and then the green and both go off. Just like "normally".

It does respond to the disk-swap-switch; i press it for a few seconds and the red light gets lit and stays on. Press again for a few seconds and the red light goes off.

I tried to insert a newer firmware onto the sd-card just to see if it was alive at all, and yes, it did the upgrade cycle (watched the leds).

If i have another drive(15x1) as same device number the computer hangs when i run an "@IO", so its there but still not.
If i have 15x1 as Please login to see this link. and sd2iec as Please login to see this link., then the "@IO" works on devPlease login to see this link., but devPlease login to see this link. gives "device not present".

I have measured all cables from the sd2iec PCB to the c64. All ok.

I have an identical sd2iec where the SD-card works.

Not sure what to try next, any suggestions/help appreciated.

    Regards
    Jani

  • First question: Which sd2iec do you have?
    A picture would help.

Secondly: Since the update cycle works the issue must be in the IEC Connection to the C64.
You should double/triple-check those three connections (ATN, DATA and CLK).
Check for connection on each of them and make sure that they are not shorted somewhere.

  • Hello and thanks for your answer.

I have the shadowolf v1.2 SD2IEC; Please login to see this link.

I can get a picture if needed though.

I checked the wires and they are ok, but i did some measuring on the bottom side on the transistors T2,T3,T4 (IRLML2402?) . And when measuring over the resistors, R15,R16,R17, on one of those i get 21 Ohm, two others give 10Kohm. On the other sd2iec board i get 10Kohm on all three. I might suspect one of the transistors have retired.

Gotta find a good place to find one of those transistors, or a couple for spares .. (or if anyone on the forum has a couple, ofcourse i pay for shipping and the parts. PM me in that case, thanks)

Which of these three is giving 21 Ohm?

  • R16 is the one giving 21Ohm.

R16 as seen on this one: Please login to see this link.

  • That's the DATA line.

Hm.... carefully remove R16 and measure the resistance between it's two soldering points.
On the PCB and on the resistor.

  • Thanks for your answer(s).

I actually removed the transistor. With it removed R16 measures 10KOhm.

If i measure between the two legs (that was over R16) of the transistor i get 21 Ohm. I don't have a transistor-tester but i have ordered a replacement transistor to see if it helps.

Yeah, looks like the FET died on you :(

  • wow great case!
    did it yourself?

    Thanks :)

I found the case on a fleamarket (it had "make me into a SD2IEC case" written all over it ;))

I made the hole for the 2 LED;s, the SD-card and the push button (disk change). In the place, where the IEC-connector is, used to be a square hole for a telephone jack connector.

It had a sticker of a (swedish) ISP/Telephone company.. I am not quite sure what it was from the beginning. Either a modem or something to do with phonecalls.. not sure.
