I think the difference between JA and JE is quite obvious. A = American version (110V); E = European Version (220V).
The numbers 1 -4 might be the batch numbers?!

But the 81 has an external power suppy. You might be right regardless - could just be where they were either intended to go, or if they were made in America or Europe.
Yes, that might be, too.
I remember that. And i wouldnt think too many Amiga users would have been happy about it.
As I was always caring more about 8-bit Commodore computers than Amiga that's an easy choice for me. ![]()
BTW, from what I experienced the internal Amiga 500 drives tend to break while identical drives in a 1581 will continue to last.
I just recently sold my 000201 (no country prefix), "Moder (!) 1581".

Drives could be identical, but floppy usage on the A500 was 100 to 1 compared to 1581 usage, mainly due to lack of 1581 titles at the time.
here is my drive:
No serial on the case!
I am damn sure the previous owner bought it in the late 80s together with his C64. So no case+PCB DIY drive.
He wrote his initials to where the serial sticker is supposed to be. So I assume that the drive already came without sticker.

My case has no serial badge too.
I currently can't find a fitting screwdriver, so I looked into my hardware list, there is written for the mainboard:
If I'll find my screwdriver, I'm adding photos.

made in Hong Kong for Germany
Ich wusste gar nicht, dass China auch das R/L Problem hat. Oder wurde die HK-Produktion von Commodore Japan aus gesteuert? Hm, ich sollte wohl endlich mal meine Bagnall-Bücher lesen...
P.S. Krass niedrige Seriennummer!
