  • Howdy folks,

hop over to the blog to see a bunch of photos of the fit-testing of the new injection-moulded cases. See the fruit of all of your contributions come together into the first mass-producable C65-compatible computer built in almost 30 years!

None of this would have been possible without all your support and encouragement along the way :)

Sneak peek to whet your appetites, but you have to go to the blog to see the rest of the photos :)

There is still more work to go on finishing the tools, which we wil update on as it progresses. Putting the matt finish onto the moulds, and dealing with any adjustments are two key upcoming steps that come to mind.

  • For rnow, just "C65 beigy-grey", as swapping colours is relatively expensive, being probably some hundred euros each time. But it doesn't mean that we can't have more colours later if the demand is there.

  • Looks absolutely gorgeous!

  • Shouldn't the case color be brighter? Like an A500 or C64C? More closer to the keys?

  • Yes, this is just a test article from the moulds. The plastic for testing is the natural colour of the plastic. We will have it coloured to much more closely match the keys.

  • Is this really the final case version with that big Hintsteiner logo on the bottom outside case? I hope that won't stay on the final case as Hintsteiner has nothing to do with the MEGA65 except being the (crowd-)paid manufacturer of the case. Even if they made some kind of "special price" or gave support in creating the case, a logo display in such prominent place and size is "a bit" too much, isn't it? A "thanks to Hintsteiner for support" on the inside would be more than enough - in my opinion. For such a prominent big logo Hintsteiner should have funded the whole case by themselves.

  • What we paid Hintsteiner compared to their commercial pricing does warrant a big thank you to them. Knowing what we paid, and what I'd expect to pay for producing these kinds of moulds, I suspect we saved about as much as we spent. Remember they took our 3D model and did the industrial design from that to design parts that are actually producable, as well as then making the moulds from that, as well as all the prototyping along the way. From our side, we are pleased that they are proud enough to put their name onto the cases, and feel that it is not disproprortionate to their contribution.

So the whole asked crowdfunding amount for the case (~66k Euro) was already fitted to Hintsteiner "doubling" that amount in the end, otherwise the crowdfunding campaign would have asked for ~130k Euro?

  • Oh dear, the screws are too long. The color of the case looks dead ..:grab1:

The screws were for test fitting. The color is no color. it's a test case from some standard plastc granulate. No final color added.

Yes, more or less this is the case. What we paid them is only a fraction of the commercial price for creating such an injection moulded case. We are really happy with the result, and we know the quality will be super, and that because the tools are in Europe, they won't just get melted down next time we don't make an order fast enough etc. The tool will become a part of the Museum of Electonic Games and Art when it is no longer being used to press out cases. A very heavy part...

  • Very nice that the moulds are kept. But I thought that if you pay for a mould, then it is your own mould and no longer the property of the factory. (So generally speaking, not only in this case).

But I think the whole time whether the 3.5 inch drive isn't disturbing at this point when typing on the keyboard...

    Unfortunately not always.

We would have been able to get a deal with the chinese as well, for almost the same prize, but they are only able to

offer such a cheap prize, by using cheap, lower quality steel and the chinese goverment keeps the steel moulds.

So you don't know, if they will, when no orders are coming in, will melt them again.

That's why we are so happy, that we have Hintsteiner as our partner. Grade A toolsteel and the moulds are ours.
